Head Girl’s Speech

Warm welcoming speech delivered by our Head Girl, Eve Wong from 5F, during the Central Board Pinning Ceremony

Good morning Dr. Harfitt, Mr. Chow, Ms. Yu, Mr. Pang, teachers, and schoolmates. It is my honour to stand here today, and take my oath of serving the Central Board for this academic year as the Head Girl.

Though my journey in the Central Board officially starts today, my journey in Good Hope Secondary School commenced 5 years ago. I was in this same Holy Spirit Hall, witnessing the pinning ceremony of the upcoming student leaders. I tried envisioning myself wearing the unfamiliar green dress and heels, making a speech in front of a thousand people. Yet it all seemed too distant for a 12-year-old girl, until she is wearing the new uniform and dreamingly experiencing the exact same thing right now.

But not only are the uniforms new for me and the 10 excos here, the responsibilities that we are going to shoulder are entirely new as well. It would be a lie if we say we are not even nervous for the tiniest bit. But with the unremitting support that the Good Hope family had and will continue providing us, excitement and enthusiasm in taking up the new role and serving the student body has undoubtedly outridden the anxiousness.

With that being said, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincerest gratitude to various members of the Good Hope family. Thank you, Sr. Pauline, Dr. Harfitt, Mr. Chow, Ms. Yu, Mr. Pang, and the school leadership team for entrusting me with this duty, and offering me this valuable opportunity to serve the school and grow into the person I aspire to be. To teachers and schoolmates, your relentless support is always the fuel for our flames to keep igniting and growing. We would not have achieved any of these milestones without you. To Solasta and all past Central Board exco members, thank you for the unwavering determination to call lead, initiate changes, and serve. We promise we would keep the flame of service ablaze. To all those who took the initiative to run for the election, thank you for striving in the Central Board Platform that brought us together. Lastly, to my 10 incoming teammates as well as sub-committee members, let's embark on this new journey as one with united passion and vision.

"You are a Head Girl, but that also makes you a Head Learner." This was one of the first sentences that Dr. Harfitt said to me when I knew I was appointed Head Girl. Indeed, in these fluctuating years, one of the things we are always doing besides wearing a mask is "learning". We are always on our way, learning to adapt to a new "norm" amidst suspensions and disruptions. Yet because we are willing to learn, we have made it this far.

Hence, I pledge on behalf of Central Board 2021-22 to carry the greatest modesty in our terms of service, thus constantly learning and improving on how to provide our very best for the school and student body. The coming year may still be obscure for us, but with our humility, faith, and the cornerstone of love, hope, joy, and thanksgiving, obstacles can always be surmounted with hands joined. Spread your wings and write the chapter of this academic year with the anchor of hope. Thank you, and may God bless you.
